In a recent article led by VSSL Fellow Dr. Kate Morgan and published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, a group of VSSL team members describe national trends in the use of Annual Wellness Visits (AWVs) between 2011-2018.
As the authors note in the rationale for their study, Medicare introduced AWVs in 2011 with the intent of using these visits to improve care for Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries through the development of prevention plans, performance of health risk assessments, and preventive services referrals. Though prior work had demonstrated early increases in AWV utilization between 2011 and 2014, Dr. Morgan and colleagues conducted their study to address the fact that little is known about longer-term trends during the era of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015.
